RESIDENCIES

The Programme

The Wêreld residency programme offers emerging and established artists the opportunity to engage within the African context, by bringing international artists to the Eastern Cape of South Africa to work, and to share experiences with the local creative community, opening up global dialogue and cross-cultural exchange.

The Space

Our residency space is set in an indigenous dune forest, within a private nature estate next to the Mtati river lagoon, and is designed to ground you in the beauty of nature, authenticity and simplicity, and to create an environment where holistic wellness and the creative process can flourish. The space includes the use of a 750 sqm work-living log-house with expansive sea views, and enjoys access to an unrestricted private stretch of beach. Artists are hosted in private en-suite rooms with full access to multiple outdoor and indoor working spaces, seating areas, reading and writing nooks, outdoor decks, and a studio space. The three-storey house can accommodate three to six artists at a time, has a resident chef, and is equipped with its own sauna.

The Experience

Our aim is to give artists the opportunity to further their practice within a culturally rich and supportive environment, with the option of having access to art professionals for contextual discourse and/or research assistance during their residency period. The Wêreld residencies are directed at artists from diverse socio- economic backgrounds, with the intention to provide an stress-free live/work environment, free from daily domestic responsibilities. Our programme is curated to enable deeper meaning, dynamic connection, and cross-disciplinary collaborations that kindle the creative spark of individuals immersed in an intensive state of focus and flow. We offer artists the opportunity to showcase their work at the end of each residency. This may include an art exhibition, a performance or a reading event, depending on the medium of the participating artist.
